Southern Cross Bed and Breakfast is located in the house of one of the doctors that used to practice in Sutherland. The 400m² house is located on a piece of land in excess of 2100m^2, making it a spacious and tranquil place for you and your party of family and friends, to relax and enjoy the splendours and attractions of Sutherland. The entire house is a non-smoking area, while those wishing to smoke are facilitated in the designated area, in a sheltered patio. Our guests are able to park their vehicles in a safe environment and parking is accommodated on our property.

The SELF CATERING unit is a self contained unit and can comfortably accommodate a family of four. We supply blankets, linen, heaters and electric blankets. The self catering unit has its own separate parking area, conveniently located at the entrance to the unit. All cutlery, crockery and cooking wares are supplied, and the kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, microwave oven and cooking unit, and the unit also has a TV. The bathroom and toilet are en-suite.

Our BED AND BREAKFAST units each have their own bathrooms and toilets, and are situated in the main house, where you will have access to the facilities for the duration of your stay. We have a family unit with a double bed and two single beds in separate rooms, but with a common bathroom and toilet, these are Saturn and Pluto. We also have a double room (Neptune) with a double bed and an en-suite toilet, and shower. All B&B units have coffee making facilities, heaters and electric blankets. Breakfasts are served in the dining area, and you might also enjoy one of our  lounges. The "Chilling Lounge" is for you, if you are wanting to just "chill" (relax). This is where you can read, knit or just hang out in the quiet, and contrary to its name, is one of our warmest rooms, as it soaks up the afternoon sun. Our popular lounge is our "Bar Lounge", while our liquor licence is still in the process of application, you can enjoy a cool-drink from the honesty bar, the wide-screen LCD TV with DSTV, and DVD player. The bar lounge also contains a fireplace, making it warm and cosy, when it's too cold to be outside.  Here you can relax and enjoy the company of friends and family or your friendly hosts.

If you want to come to Sutherland and are not able to book a tour at the observatory, don't despair, we have the facilities to do star-gazing and can arrange to do a star-party for you and your friends at a site of your choice. We offer this service at a reduced price especially for our guests.

We are realising our responsibilities to the environment and our fellow South Africans by trying to conserve electricity and as such we have installed lights running solely on solar power and we intend to expand this to more lighting in and around the house, as well as a geyser controller, to minimise wastage of electricity. We will be expanding further on the project to conserve more power by installing solar water heaters too. In the event of power-shedding or a power failure you can be assured that there will still be light at the end of the tunnel ;)
