To get to Sutherland, it is easiest to follow the N1 between Cape Town and Johannesburg. About 27 kMs from Laingsburg, on the Cape Town side, is a cross road. On the south side of the road is Maatjiesfontein, and to the north is the R354 which takes you to Sutherland. This is the only tar road leading to Sutherland. Follow the road until you get into town and then proceed until one block after the stop street. Turning right will take you to the observatory, but you will need to turn left and continue until the end of the road. At the end of the road, on your right you will find Southern Cross Bed & Breakfast.
It is quite safe to use the gravel roads leading to Sutherland, and generally they are in good condition. From Fraserburg, the last 10kMs will be tar. This will take you passed the observatory, and if you are using this road, then follow the road into town, and at the end on the right hand side you will see Southern Cross Bed & Breakfast.
From Calvina, follow the road into town, until the road becomes tarred, drive until you see the church on your right hand side, and the street just before the church will be where you need to turn, and once again you will find Southern Cross Bed & Breakfast on your right hand side at the end of the road.
NB: Whilst there is cell phone reception in Sutherland, there is no reception along the roads leading to the town. The last points of reception would be at Fraserburg, Calvina or the N1 turn off. Therefore feel free to contact us (sms or call) and let us know the route that you will be approaching from, and we will know how long approximately it should take for your arrival. Should you not arrive after the agreed time, we will know that there is a problem and we could summons help. Some roads are not travelled frequently so if there is a problem with your vehicle you can expect to spend a fair amount of time stranded.
